Becoming a Profession Body
The first step to registration is to ensure your profession is represented by a professional body. The minimum requirements to form a professional body are a constitution, and an elected Chair and Treasurer. For Registration purposes your professional body must also be able to prove to HPC that it represents the majority of your profession.
Education/Training
Your professional body must also have or establish an Education Group, whose role will be to design or adapt your profession’s academic education in liaison with the education providers who already, or may potentially offer your course. This will serve as the direct entry route for registration. The membership must agree with the minimum educational entry qualification. This must also be national and accessible to all members.
Alternative registration criteria must also be established for those already working in the profession and who may not possess the direct entry qualification (eg grand-parenting). For this registration route, it must also be decided with approval of the membership what alternative qualifications are available. It must also be decided what level of experience is acceptable to register potentially unqualified members.
An accreditation process will also need to be established for any providers of your educational/training route. Ideally a professional standards and competence assessment should also be embedded into your training route.
Members of the Professional Body must also be willing to be trained as Professional Body Moderators for the training route.
Requirements for VRC
To join VRC you will require:
- A Professional Body Registrar and Deputy to attend Council meetings (must be registered).
- A scrutiniser’s checklist – unique to your profession.
- Professional Body Scrutinizers (must be on the register)
- A registration committee
- Professional Body specific guidance notes for applicants.
Professional Body Registrar and Deputy
A Registrar and Deputy will need to be elected by your PB to attend VRC Council meetings. Both the Registrar and Deputy must be registered and will be required to submit a VRC application for scrutinising and approval by the VRC Registrar/Council.
Development of a Scrutiniser’s Checklist.
This needs to be professional body specific, however a template can be provided. The checklist is used to assess each application to ensure the applicant meets the minimum requirements for registration.
Professional Body Scrutinisers
Volunteers will be required to act as scrutinisers for applications from your professional body. If the scrutiniser has any queries with an application this must be raised with the professional body registrar before referral to the Council is necessary. Scrutinisers must also be registered.
Professional Body specific guidance notes for applicants
A template for guidance notes for candidates can be provided, but this will need to be amended to include the specific academic qualifications/grand parenting requirements your professional body requires for registration.
